A day after its release, Wuthering Waves already wallows in mixed reviews, particularly over its confusing story in the early game plot.
The gaming world was swept by its feet on May 23 as everyone tuned in to the release of the much-awaited Wuthering Waves. The ARPG game has been dubbed by many to be the “Genshin Impact killer” as players awaited the next big thing in the genre to top or replicate the achievements of Hoyoverse’s biggest title.
Kuro Games’ newest release was instantly received with mixed reviews upon its release. Many lauded Wuthering Waves for its immersive combat and new mechanics to the booming genre. However, many players criticized the plot and storyline of the game.
The game revolves around its main character, Rover, and their introduction to Sol-III as a stranger. Despite Rover’s unknown identity, let alone questionable entity, everyone in Huanglong (the first nation in Wuthering Waves) receives them with welcoming arms.
Many players instantly called out how unrealistic and unlikely the story development was in the early game. One player dismissed the story as “not making sense,” especially how Huanglong locals and officials treated Rover as royalty upon arrival.
The player’s claim was supported by a screenshot of the game from its early closed beta test, in which Chixia (a character from Huanglong) holds the Rover at gunpoint upon waking. Some Wuthering Waves fans echoed the sentiment that the earlier version of the story made more sense than its current version.
Despite the clamor for the initial version of the game’s plot, some players who experienced the beta test firsthand shooed away the better storyline expectations by saying that the beta version is “just as bad, if not worse.”
Wuthering Waves beta test players also explained that despite the early hostility in this version of the story, the Huanglong characters begin to trust and hold Rover in high regard soon after the quest chain starts.
Beyond the storyline criticism, some players also noted the seemingly off-putting English dub and the low-quality graphics of the game. Kuro Games already apologized and compensated for the lag and bugs on Wuthering Waves’ day 1 release.
While the jar of reviews continues to be mixed with differing criticism and praise, it is indisputable that Wuthering Waves had a successful launch date. The game garnered over 100,000 concurrent viewers on Twitch and was a constant trending topic on X on its release day, promising a buzzing community for the ARPG title.
