League of Legends overhauled Mastery sparks outrage over “ugly” icons and missing points.
Among the biggest changes Riot Games announced for their League of Legends 2024 roadmap is overhauling the Champion Mastery mechanics. While many looked forward to the “infinite” Mastery points, the new badge visuals already garnered negative attention earlier this year.
Upon the rollout of the most-awaited 14.10 midseason patch, many LoL players were instantly confused and upset about the new system. One of the most salient points players made is that their Mastery points seemingly have vanished into thin air or at least were made unavailable to view for the players.
Before the 14.10 update, League of Legends players can individually see their Champion Mastery score aside from its level. However, the reworked mechanics only favor showing the new Mastery level with the real score hidden from view.
While the endless Mastery level was a delight to most players, many were just sad to see the hours of work put into earning Mastery points for their favorite Champions be put to rest.
Beyond the missing points, some players also echoed the initial backlash against the new badge visuals. Earlier this year, a sneak peek at the updated Mastery Badge design already made a ruckus in the League of Legends community, with some players branding the badge “overdesigned” and “cheap-looking.”
Riot Games designers explained that the updated Mastery Badge is inspired by the fictional region of Mount Targon, which plays a significant role in Runeterra lore.
However, some players noted that the visuals stick out like a sore thumb as the other elements and visuals in the game are inspired by Hextech style (another fictional region), with the badges being the only one that differs.
Despite the negative reviews, some players were glad to see an improved rewards system for the Champion Mastery. Instead of rewarding only the badges and “brownie points” for the high Mastery scores, League of Legends players can now get Hextech chests based on their Mastery progress.
So if you’re ready to grab more LoL cosmetics and in-game content, make sure to queue up with your favorite Champion to start raking in Mastery points!
