After massive backlash, PlayStation considered the feedback of the Helldivers 2 players.
Helldivers 2 is a popular cooperative third-person shoot-’em-up developed by Arrowhead Game Studios and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. It was released in February 2024 for PC and PlayStation 5. This is a direct sequel to the 2015 Helldivers, a top-down shooter.
On May 3, 2024, Sony announced that they would be removing Steam players’ access unless they create a PlayStation Network (PSN) account and link it. This resulted in major backlash from the playerbase, as many countries were unable to create a PSN account, prompting them to request a refund and leave a negative review on Steam.
It seemed like the end of a loved game until today, May 6, 2024, when PlayStation’s official X account provided an update regarding the situation.
PlayStation shared, “Helldivers fans — we’ve heard your feedback on the Helldivers 2 account linking update. The May 6 update, which would have required Steam and PlayStation Network account linking for new players and for current players beginning May 30, will not be moving forward.”
They continued, “We’re still learning what is best for PC players and your feedback has been invaluable. Thanks again for your continued support of Helldivers 2 and we’ll keep you updated on future plans.”
Bucky from Pocketpair, the video game company behind Palworld, commented on the situation, “Great decision and glad it all got sorted out!” They added, “However… It’ll be interesting to see what % of the Steam reviews actually change their review…”
Currently, Helldivers 2 still can’t be bought on Steam for the 177 affected countries, including the Philippines, Vietnam, and Afghanistan. Stay tuned for further updates regarding the situation here on Level Push.
