Fans had much to say regarding the newest Clash of Clans hero skin featuring Erling Haaland. Unfortunately, one of those is a plea for it to be the last celebrity collab.
Supercell recently pulled an out-of-the-box move with the current Clash of Clans event and in-game content. The 12-year-old game used to take inspiration from real-life occasions and usual game themes for its events. Still, the new Barbarian King skin took a surprising turn by featuring Manchester United’s Erling Haaland.
The decision to feature a real-life personality as a hero skin surely took Clash of Clans players by surprise, as all skins in the game used to feature only artistic and style changes to each hero.
The special Haaland Barbarian King skin features the football star as the Barbarian King himself, which was not received well by the player community.
Some players detail that they do not appreciate Supercell’s move to feature celebrities in the game. This can be attributed to the fact that Clash of Clans is a worldwide game, with players from countries where football isn’t the most beloved sport.
Moreover, some CoC players dislike the notion that having a real person portray the Barbarian King departs from the in-game lore. While Clash of Clans doesn’t have a definitive storyline, most of its themes used to be cohesive across all heroes and units – until Haaland’s introduction.
Haaland explained that he was a long-time player of Clash of Clans, which may have affected Supercell’s decision to feature him as a hero skin.
While the current event may be unpopular with many Clash of Clans fans, some still praised the Royal Champion football skin.
Clash of Clans players could only hope the football event doesn’t serve as a precedent for more celebrity content like Fortnite skins. However, only time will tell if we’ll see more familiar faces in the mobile game.
