Brawl Stars developers have admitted that recent changes to Hypercharge unlocking were “poorly communicated.”
Brawl Stars is on the verge of another stacked game update, filled with new Brawlers, Hypercharges, balance changes, skins, mutations, and more. Yet, one key change to progression was omitted from the most recent Brawl Talk, and players feel left in the dark.
Before April 21’s Brawlk Talk, Brawl Stars revealed that the troubled Hypercharge Unleashed mode would be removed from the game. However, it wasn’t all doom and gloom as developers shared, “We are making it easier and faster to get new Hypercharges.”
However, as it stands, the promise of “easier and faster” ways to get new Hypercharges hasn’t been met.
Sneak peeks from content creators have revealed that the new update will reduce Hypercharge exclusivity in the shop from 14 days to 7 days. Furthermore, new players will receive Shelly’s Hypercharge upon reaching 1,000 Trophies. But there are no other changes and seemingly no replacement for the now-removed Hypercharge Unleashed.
The Hypercharge Unleashed game mode, although flawed, guaranteed a new Hypercharge worth 5,000 coins upon completion. The removal of this game mode essentially means that players lose 5,000 coins worth of value each update. Over the course of a year, that’s equivalent to roughly 30,000 coins worth of value that players will now be without.
Confusion and frustration among players reached new heights following the sneak peeks, specifically about how there was no information regarding
once sneak peeks from content creators confirmed New players, too, But there’s no replacement for the now-removed Hypercharge Unleashed event, and there had been no information specifically about how it would be simpler or faster to get Hypercharges, as promised.
“If there aren’t any other changes planned, this is a pretty major nerf to F2P progression. Didn’t they say Hypercharges would become easier to obtain after the removal of Hypercharge Unleashed? How does this improve progression in any way?” a concerned player remarked.
Community manager Dani took to X to address the backlash, admitting the communication missteps. “Yep, that was poorly communicated for sure,” he confessed.
Dani shed light on why Hypercharge Unleashed was removed from the game, stating, “The reason why we removed the event was because it wasn’t performing well and because it’s one of the most exciting rewards we could give we would like to get something in return, either more player engagement or more reach/buzz/any other trendy word.”
While many in the community believed that the mode’s removal was due to the matchmaking issues surrounding the game mode, Brawl Stars has now all but confirmed that they were simply giving too much away for free.
Despite the controversy, the developers are hopeful that the revised Hypercharge system will ultimately benefit the community, especially with planned special events that could redistribute the unused resources. “This resource ‘budget’ won’t just disappear, anything that we don’t use could be given back to the community through special events and such,” Dani added.
So, in summary, the only game mode that guaranteed players a new Hypercharge for free has been removed from the game and replaced with… nothing.
