Larian Studios pleas for fans to stop “toxicity and threats” to devs as players demand mod support for the blockbuster game Baldur’s Gate 3.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is undeniably the most significant release of 2023, thwarting long-awaited releases like Alan Wake 2 and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 in the coveted Game of The Year awards. More than its immersive gameplay and unique take on the RPG genre, Baldurs Gate is lauded for its storytelling and production quality.
However, the game’s popularity is a double-edged sword for its devs. Larian Studios is now reportedly receiving threats and toxic messages from the Baldur’s Gate 3 community amid calls for mod support.
The devs recently announced that mod support is in their vision for the blockbuster RPG. In a social media post by Larian Studios’ Director of Publishing, he states that plans for mod support will be explained in detail soon. Still, he clarifies that threatening and toxicity towards devs wouldn’t do any good for the community.
The demand stems from heated discussions and threats in the developers’ Discord server, with some players arguing over patch notes and in-game changes. The developments in the server led some moderators and creators to leave the server over the harassment.
While the conversation is hot in the Discord server, it seems like Baldurs’ Gate fans on Reddit would prefer waiting for official mod support instead of unintentionally breaking their games.
One comment details that the jump from having 2 million players to 10 million is a massive leap that could easily overwhelm the devs.
Another player explains that BG3 is a multi-platform game, so the devs would need more time than usual to release an update with such a sizeable change.
Meanwhile, other players are upset at the hate the developer studios have received over a seemingly “small issue.” Some players share their experience of discovering new features and story arcs of the game despite having over 100 hours of playtime.
Another player goes as far as to say that Baldur’s Gate is far from being in a state where “mods keep the game alive,” with the title’s expansive storyline and multiple possibilities.
As of now, dedicated Baldur’s Gate 3 players will need more patience to experience mods that let them spend more time with Shadowheart or have a totally tangent plot of falling in love with Astarion.
