With its skyrocketing success, Helldivers 2 fans express how the game’s fun and violence tops any MMO gimmicks.
Helldivers 2 is a third-person multiplayer shooter developed by Arrowhead Game Studios and was released on February 8, 2024. This is the sequel to the 2015 Helldivers, a top-down shooter game. Despite the sequel’s recent release, it has already reached 400,000 current players on Steam.
The game’s highlight is its violent shoot-’em-up mechanics, where players could get together to battle alien threats on random planets. Players may use different weapons, such as pistols, machine guns, and flamethrowers. There are also stratagems, which are turrets and airstrikes, among others. To add to the chaos, friendly fire is always on in the game.
A Reddit user shared that Helldivers 2 has some of the best gameplay from any shooter game in the past decade. They had seen others who were looking for “damage numbers,” but the player only minded how parts of the aliens flew off and his soldier getting covered in the aliens’ green blood.
Many players have shared that the game is all about fun and violence, which makes it enjoyable. They stated that many bigger game companies “forgot to make recent games fun.” To add to this, another user expressed that there’s a need for co-op games that don’t revolve around PVP.
There were players who wanted to see more physical damage degradation on the enemies, which serves as a marker for their health. They added: “Way too many games rely on flashing lights, an HP bar, or flat-out numbers to show to players the status. I find it very lazy design, whereas the deterioration of an enemy looks way better/intuitive in my opinion.” This is similar to that in Monster Hunter World, where the monsters can be seen limping when it’s at a lower health percentage.
The game also doesn’t have a storyline that players would follow through linearly. This was welcomed by a lot of the fans, as they stated: “No story is a welcome relief for me. Democracy doesn’t need a story.” Some players thought they’d have character customization in the game but discovered that it wouldn’t matter anyway, as the characters die and get replaced by a completely different person.
Some players who remembered how the first installment of the game had weapon customizations or progression, and they would like to have it back. It didn’t have to be extremely complex, but anything simple, such as larger or more magazines, would do the trick. Players look forward to the updates that bring in content like this one.
The only problem at the moment is the struggle to get into Helldivers 2 due to server issues, but the original poster believes it would take a week or so to get it fixed. As Helldivers 2 just recently released, fixes and updates will surely come. In the meantime, take the time to explore the best weapons and stratagems to have in the game!
